Supply and Demand of Love

I moved to Alaska in July 2021. I was told many people that there were more men than women in Alaska and finding a “girlfriend” would be difficult. I was worried. I thought I would have to fight hundreds of men for the one available girl in the town. I was wrong, but were they wrong? They made it sound like a tragic shortage, supply, and demand.

Demographics of Love

According to the 2020 US Census data they are correct, there are more men than women in the state of Alaska. There are 23,667 more men than women. About 2% of the total population. That is not a substantial number when you realize how big the State of Alaska is. That is less than one extra man per square mile. In the cities you will find the disparity greater. In my town of approximately 13,500 there are 336 more men than women.

Do Demographics Tell the Story

Then why does it seem there are more women than men in my town? Most of the men live in the city but work elsewhere. They are tugboat captains, fishers, lumberman, or seasonal workers who leave for months at a time. They maintain residences here, and they call Alaska home, but they are rarely home.
