Living Alaska, Football

I love football. I loved playing it, I love watching it, I love reading about it in the sports pages. I follow the statistics and know the NFL standings. I once lived in a city that had two NFL teams and then they had none. They are now back to two teams again, one the same that left and one that moved seventy-five miles north of its old home. My favorite team is from the City I grew up in. A bunch of Gold Miners showed up there in 1849 and made the city famous.

Then I moved to Alaska. There are no NFL teams from Alaska. That is too bad because we have lots of fans up here. The closest City to Alaska from the lower forty-eight is Seattle. Most of the native-born Alaskans are Seattle fans due to proximity. In my town there are a lot of Ohio State fans. College football is just as popular as the NFL. My college did not have a football program, so I did not get actively involved in following college ball. I played Rugby back then which kept me from having a favorite college team. I still watch college football but do not have a favorite like most people in Alaska.

Most of Alaska has lower forty-eight transplants, or people who have lived down south. Every town has their own favorite college football team. It could have been because one of the locals went there to play twenty years ago or just a family from Ohio came to live there years ago. Different bars show different games and…
