Living Alaska, Let’s Go Skiing
Ski Report
I finally got in a couple of hours of skiing in yesterday in Juneau, Alaska. It has been snowing for the last three months and there is plenty of snow in the mountains. I can see it from my home in Ketchikan, Alaska, but there are no ski areas in my town. The closest one is in Juneau, Alaska. My job brought me to Juneau last week and I finally got six hours off to go play.
The snow was incredible, light, and fluffy. It reminded me of the powder in Utah. Utah seems to have an abundance of the super cold light and airy powder. Alaska skiing is much the same. I plowed through snow drifts up to my thighs yesterday. I shredded down the groomed slopes a little too fast. It wasn’t much of a challenge, so I hit the trees. I found plenty of technical stuff amongst the trees. I sank up to my waist more than once, I should have rented longer ski’s.
The services and personnel were extremely helpful and nice. This included the coffee bar where I bought an Americano before the ticket booth opened. The service at the ticket counter and the rental office were fast, efficient, and friendly. I am used to California skiing, and things are less personal and more conveyor belt type of operations. Like at a movie theater they sell you a ticket, and that’s it. You are on your own. This is not the Alaskan way.
