The Supply Chain and Build Back Something

There is a supply chain problem in the United States today. We have all read about it, heard about it, or experienced it firsthand. There is no denying that Covid19 exasperated the problem. But is the supply chain problem solely due to Covid19? The answer is no. There is no way to sugar coat the truth here. We have under invested in infrastructure in the USA and have a deferred maintenance issue. The Build Back Better is a bandage for the problem, but it at least acknowledges that there is a problem.

We need to start building more infrastructure in the United States. Our railroads in the 1800’s followed by bridges, dams and highways in the 1900’s has been followed up by nothing in the 2000’s. How this affects the current situation of supply chain disruption is now self-evident. But the lack of building infrastructure is only part of the problem. We do not have enough children in the workforce pipeline to meet the increasing demand to replace or rebuild the infrastructure. What this means is that we are not training enough heavy equipment operators to build infrastructure. We are not training enough contractors or construction workers to replace retiring workers. We are not training enough pilots, ship captains and the minutia of other workers to fill the void of retiring worker…
