Indoor Winter Sports
They play basketball in Alaska. It is a popular sport. It makes sense though because you can play it indoors. I watch the kids play at the gym. They have four games going at once, full court with an indoor running track above the courts. I like to watch the kids play. They miss more shots than they make but it reminds me of playing when I was 10 years old. I wasn’t very good, but I could play.
They get a good crowd for the basketball league games. The stands are crowded with mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and aunts and uncles. It is a small town, and everyone knows the coaches and referees. I enjoy watching the games as much as I do the NBA. To tell you the truth they are more exciting, less predictable.
I was driving home from work the other day listening to Metlakatla play Craig. Those are small towns in Southeast Alaska. It was the women’s High School basketball game broadcast on the local radio station. I listened to the game like it was an NBA Playoff game. It was more interesting than the NBA because these were the local high schools and I felt personally involved. I have only lived here for seven months, but when you live in a small town, these are big events.
They have intramural leagues for both men and women at the Recreation Center. I have not…
